Omicron (Pango lineage B.1.1.529) was newly classified as a variant of concern (VOC) by WHO on 26 November 2021 due to concerns regarding potential immune escape, increased transmissibility, reduction in vaccine effectiveness, as well as increased risk for re-infections compared to the Delta variant.
Mutations in the spike glycoprotein of Omicron
Sino Biological is developing a series of recombinant Omicron Spike Proteins to support the study of Omicron variant. The Omicron variant is by far the most divergent variant characterised by a high number of mutations in the spike protein. Several mutations (e.g.: N501Y, P681H) have been identified in previous variants and are associated with increased transmissibility, immune escape, or other properties.

SEC-MALS Validated SARS-CoV-2 Prefusion Trimeric Spike Variant Proteins
The spike protein resides on the surface of SARS-CoV-2 virions in a trimeric conformation (also known as the pre-fusion format). Evidence showed that pre-fusion Spike trimer is relatively unstable. It is essential to develop a stable pre-fusion spike protein trimer to support the development of vaccines, therapeutic antibodies, and diagnostic reagents. Sino Biological has successfully developed a series of highly stable trimeric spike proteins, covering multiple VOIs or VOCs, such as Alpha (B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), Delta (B.1.617. 2), Kappa (B.1.617.1), etc.
