Reliable Assays to Measure Reactive Oxygen Species
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are continually produced during metabolic processes, and ROS generation is normally counterbalanced by the action of antioxidant enzymes and other redox molecules. However, excess reactive oxygen species must be promptly eliminated from the cell by a variety of antioxidant defense mechanisms. Excess ROS can lead to cellular injury in the form of damaged DNA, lipids and proteins.
Here we discuss how to measure ROS in a variety of samples types.
Universal ROS Assay for Intact Cells
Cell Biolabs OxiSelect™ Intracellular ROS Assay Kit is a cell-based assay for measuring total reactive oxygen species including a wide variety of free radicals such as hydroxyl and peroxyl, as well as other ROS such as hydrogen peroxide. The assay is highly sensitive to 10 pM.

In Vitro ROS/RNS Assay
Traditional methods for detecting ROS activity only allowed you to use intact live cells. With our OxiSelect™ In Vitro ROS/RNS Assay, you can detect reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in a variety of sample types including blood, urine, tissue homogenates and cell lysates.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Peroxidase Assays
Hydrogen peroxide is one of the most prevalent and stable forms of ROS in the body. Cell Biolabs hydrogen peroxide assay kits provide a quick measure of hydrogen peroxide levels in about 30-90 minutes. Available with colorimetric or fluorometric detection in a 96-well plate reader.

Nitric Oxide Assays
Nitric oxide is a reactive nitrogen species (RNS) which is produced by nitric oxide synthase (NOS). The production of nitric oxide has been established as a mediator in various diseases including diabetes, renal ischemia, cancer, atherosclerosis, and vascular and inflammatory diseases.
✔ Intracellular Nitric Oxide Assay uses a fluorescent probe for direct nitric oxide detection in live intact cells. The nitric oxide-specific probe is extremely photostable and provides a wide pH stability range of 5.5 to 9.0.
✔ In Vitro Nitric Oxide Assays measure nitric oxide indirectly via the breakdown products of nitric oxide (nitrite and nitrate) in cell lysates, tissue homogenates, plasma, serum, saliva, urine, and cell culture supernatants. Assays are available for either colorimetric or fluorometric detection.
